The question: What have you learned in this class?

Where does one begin? As I sit here and reflect on what I have learned these past few days, all I can think about is how my brain is on overload – WOW. I am not sure how I learned about all of these technology tools (blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, RSS, aggregators, podcasting, and much more – even a little about second life) in just a few days. Of course, by no means do I consider myself an expert in any of this. In fact, I would put myself under the category of beginner (an enthusiastic one though).

When I walked into this class Monday morning I would have never imagined coming out of it with so much excitement about what I have learned – I have even been losing sleep at night because when I go to bed I can’t stop thinking about how I am going to use all this stuff in my classes. I have even found myself waking up with those “billiant ideas” that come to you in the middle of the night and those ideas are about blogging, wikis, social bookmarking – who would of thought.

I think the most important thing I will take away from this class is that their are many great resources out there to help one use these tools and to implement them into one’s curriculum. I feel like I need more time in a day just so that I can read blogs, listen to podcasts, and practice all these great tools. I know that I will definately be a better teacher because of this class and I honestly believe my students will be better students.

I have decided to change my project for this class (I still have intentions of using a blog and/or wiki in my accounting class). I changed my project to developing a ning (thanks Stephanie). The ning will be for the Maine State Chapter of FBLA-PBL (Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda). As State Chairperson for this student organization, I have been looking for a way to not only post things like upcoming events and important information for all to see but a way of having other local chapter members let us know what they are doing in their chapters. I chose ning because it has a blog feature and it also has a Forum feature. We hold monthly board meetings and sometimes because the students have such busy schedules and some have to travel to attend, it would be easier to use the forum feature to meet as opposed to meeting in person. It also lets me have control over who can be a member!!! I am excited about this!!!! If you would like to visit my ning sign up to be a member at http://mainefbla.ning.com.

After reading some of the blogs and clicking around on the blog 2¢ Worth what I have come to realize is that these blogs not only have great information in them but they also have links to other great blogs with great information. Great people tend to be connected with other great people so I found myself reading blogs that he reads – what a wealth of information!!! As I was reading his blog An Interesting Day at Wildwood I had to chuckle as he was presenting at a technology convention and the Internet was down – how ironic!!! Anyway what I found interesting about this post is that he said it shoud not be no child left behind but All Children Ready for the Future – what a concept!!! As I read all this information it definately crosses my mind that I have a lot to learn and realize that as soon as I learn it it will probably change. I also found what he said about blogging very interesting in Playing? In the Library he stated that sometimes when he blogs he gets in wrong or leaves something out, as it is something he tends to do quickly; but the great part about it is that what he misses someone else will add it in a comment. What a great way to share ideas. I think I am going to like this blogging thing!!!

As I spent some time reading the Cool Cat Teacher Blog, which by the way I found to be a bit overwhelming (more information than I could read in a year), I found myself thinking that I wish I had known about this blog sooner. At first I was a bit intimidated – Where do I start? then I found the section called most valuable posts (sounded like a good place to begin). The blog Ten Habits of Bloggers that Win was definately a great place to start, as I am a new blogger this provided me with some dos and do nots that I would have not been aware of – I don’t want anyone to think I am a “newbie”!! I also found the blog on The Power of a Newbie to be beneficial. This is only a fraction of what I found to be beneficial to me at this blog. I have two young children and now know that my children can blog (well one of them needs to learn to read first but…) coolcatkid is a blog for children and I may even consider having my oldest set up his own blog (why not???) I definately hope I am moving in the direction of being a bumblebee and not a bobblehead.

As I think of what delicious allows one to do or to this point what I think it allows one to do (as I have only been using it for 1 day) I get excited about the ways I can use it on a personal level and in my classroom. Of course, to just be able to bookmark all my favorite sites and have it still be somewhere when I change computers it not only equals time savings but it is very very convenient. I think of the benefits of being able to save sites that I want my students to access and not have to say, “OKay here are the URLs” but instead have them go to my delicious page and all the links I would like them to use are available to them – how easy and convenient!!! Also using the “popular feature” to find links others are using and having my students use this feature what a great way to research for material. Especially because students can access them whether they are in my classroom, in the media center or at home. This is definately a tool I will be using in my classroom!
